Are Blundstones Waterproof? The Style Number Decides (2026)
Most are not. Blundstone names nine waterproof styles and calls everything else weatherproof leather. How to read the number inside your own boot.
Most Blundstones are not waterproof, and the style number tells you which yours is. Blundstone names exactly nine waterproof styles. Everything else, including the Originals almost everyone owns, uses what the company calls “premium weatherproof leather”.
That word is the whole problem. Weatherproof sounds like a promise. In Blundstone’s own description it means the leather is “as water-resistant as any leather can be, while still allowing the foot to breathe”. Which is a careful, accurate, and easily misread way of saying the boot is not sealed.
The nine waterproof styles
These are the Winter Thermal and Winter Thermal All-Terrain ranges, built with waterproof leather, latex-sealed seams and injection moulded soles:
566 · 584 · 1477 · 1478 · 1391 · 1392 · 2241 · 2242 · 2250
If your number is not on that list, your boots are weatherproof. There is no in-between tier, and no amount of wear breaks a pair in to become waterproof.
Our waterproof Blundstone picks cover the ones you can actually buy right now, and which of the three shapes suits which kind of wet.
Find your number in about thirty seconds
The style number is printed on the label inside the boot, usually on the tongue or the inner shaft, and on the box if you still have it. Three or four digits.
That is the entire check. It beats every other test because Blundstone assigns the number by construction, so the number is the answer rather than a clue.
If the label has worn away, the next best signal is the elastic. On a waterproof Thermal the side panels are sealed and sit flush against the leather. On an Original the elastic is exposed woven fabric, which is a wick, not a barrier.
Why a Chelsea boot leaks where it does
On most boots you worry about the seams. On this shape, worry about the sides.
A Chelsea has two elastic gussets so you can pull it on, and on a non-waterproof model that elastic is fabric with stitching either side of it. Water does not need to get through the leather. It goes in at the ankle, through the panel, while the leather is still beading nicely and looking fine.
This is why treating a pair of Originals with wax helps less than people expect. The wax works on the part that was already the better half.
If the general distinction is what you are after rather than the Blundstone specifics, we have it in waterproof vs water-resistant.
If yours are Originals
They are still good boots. They are just dry-weather and light-rain boots.
Reproof the leather a few times a season with a wax or spray made for smooth leather, using the method in our home waterproofing guide, and keep them off slush and standing water. Salt is the bigger threat than rain in winter anyway: it dries into the grain and cracks it.
For genuinely wet days, the honest answer is a different pair. That can be a Thermal from the list above, or a rain boot if you want to stop thinking about it entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Are Blundstone boots waterproof?
Most are not. Blundstone names nine waterproof styles, all in the Winter Thermal and Winter Thermal All-Terrain ranges: 566, 584, 1477, 1478, 1391, 1392, 2241, 2242 and 2250. Every other Blundstone, including the Originals most people own, uses what the company calls premium weatherproof leather. In Blundstone's own words that leather is as water-resistant as any leather can be, which is a careful way of saying it is not sealed.
Are Blundstone 550s waterproof?
No. The 550 is an Original, so it has weatherproof leather rather than waterproof construction. It handles drizzle, wet grass and a dash between buildings, and it will wet through in sustained rain or if you stand in a puddle. That is not a defect in your pair, it is what the model is.
What is the difference between waterproof and weatherproof Blundstones?
Waterproof styles are built to keep water out: waterproof leather, latex-sealed seams, sealed elastic panels and an injection moulded sole. Weatherproof means the leather itself resists water while still breathing, with no sealing at the seams or the elastic. The first is construction, the second is a material property, and only the first survives a genuinely wet day.
How do I know which Blundstone I have?
Look for the style number, which is printed on the label inside the boot, usually on the tongue or the inner shaft, and is on the box. Three or four digits. Check it against the nine waterproof numbers. If your number is not on that list, your boots are weatherproof, whatever the shop told you.
Can you make Blundstones waterproof?
You can improve water resistance and you cannot add sealed seams at home. A leather waterproofing wax or spray will make water bead on the leather and slow it down. On a Chelsea boot it cannot do much about the elastic side panels, which on a non-waterproof model are not sealed, so water still has a way in at the ankle. Treat them, and still treat them as dry-weather boots.
Are Blundstones good in snow?
The Thermal and All-Terrain Thermal styles are, because they combine the waterproof construction with insulation and, on the All-Terrain, a deeper tread. The Originals are not: no insulation, a fairly smooth sole, and leather that wets through once snow melts against it. If snow is the reason you are buying, buy from the waterproof list rather than adding thick socks to a pair of Originals.
